After a rapid growth period, bariatric surgery has been entering a plateau phase. The majority of the obese population still does not take advantage from the surgical possibilities, despite good public information and awareness in the medical community. This makes sense if one realizes that most patients are afraid of the risks and adverse consequences of surgical treatments. Hence, clinical research should be oriented towards less invasive procedures that could be accepted by the mainstream.
Like in 2011, we will gather experts from worldwide who will stress the current trends in new bariatric technologies; members of the industry will be free to express their needs and concerns, test the reaction of the audience, and outline the projects that can be disclosed.
This field is actually moving faster than anticipated. Some of the techniques that have been presented have been put on hold (sometimes regrettably, like the endostapling TOGA device), and others have been recently introduced, and/or upgraded. New developments and combinations appeared.
Regarding the program and devices already on the market, practical aspects will be emphasized, e.g. "How I do it", with video-sessions. |
